Mind Body Approaches

The field of neurocience has shown that mental health distress is not just a disturbance in the brain, but a body mind experience.  When a person is experiencing strong emotion, nerve cells from the brain are connected to other organs in the body, the gut, heart and lungs, thus the emotions are experienced as mind body sensations.   Also, when stress and anxiety occur, the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline are also released into the body.  Chronic prolonged release of these hormones can eventually lead to lowered immune functioning and illness. Through Mind Body Interventions, the therapist can teach clients how to use evidence based interventions to calm and ease distressing emotions and assist in healing through the release of healing chemicals in the body. These Interventions include, Mindfulness Meditation, Relaxation and Breathing Techniques, Imagery, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), Emotional Freedom Techniques (Acupoint Tapping) Post Induction Therapy  (PIT), Somatic Experiencing, Energy Psychology Techniques, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy.  Yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong are also Mind Body Interventions and can be helpful in promoting relaxation and emotional healing in the body.   Mind Body Approaches are used in the treatment of Anxiety Disorders, Depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Chronic Pain, and whenever managing or calming emotions is needed to reduce symptoms and allow a person to heal and be more able to deal effectively with life concerns and issues.
